Granite is formed naturally and starts out as molten rock. When it cools underground, it changes from a liquid to a solid mass of crystals.  Granite takes thousands to millions of years to form, and each piece is unique.  


  • PROS
    • Durable
    • Adds to home value
    • Unique appearance
    • Easy to clean
    • Resists scratching
  • CONS
    • Not DIY friendly
    • Repairs are difficult
    • Requires periodic sealing

Marble is a natural stone that is formed when limestone is heated to an extreme temperature fusing minerals together. It comes in a variety of types, prices, qualities, and colors. 


  • PROS
    • Looks rich and elegant
    • Cool surface - great for cooking
    • Increased home value
    • Longevity
  • CONS
    • Porous surface - may stain
    • Requires periodic sealing
    • Etching -  if exposed to acidic substances
    • Heat - not completely heat resistant
    • Expensive

Quartz is an engineered product that contains a combination of natural mineral quarts as well as resin and other substances.   Quartz comes in a wide range of patterns and color options, and it can be made to look like marble counters. 


  • PROS
    • Durable
    • Hard as granite
    • Stain resistant
    • Non-porous
    • Sealing not needed
    • Easy to clean with regular soap and water


  • CONS
    • Not completely heat resistant
    • Exposure to sun may fade color
    • Seams may be visible

Quartzite

Quartzite is a natural stone that forms when quartz sandstone is exposed to high temperatures and pressures melting the sand grains together.  Typically, this occurs because of tectonic compression.  Like other natural stones, every piece is unique.



  • PROS
    • Easier to care for than marble
    • Harder than granite and quite durable
    • UV resistant
    • Easy to clean with regular soap and water
  • CONS
    • Not completely heat resistant
    • May stain
    • Requires periodic sealing

Dolomite

Dolomite

Dolomite is a natural stone that is formed when limestone comes into contact with magnesium rich groundwater.  This substance is often confused with marble or quartzite.  


  • PROS
    • Not as fragile as marble
    • Hard as granite
    • Stain resistant
    • Etching -  if exposed to acidic substances
  • CONS
    • Not as hard as granite
    • Not as scratchproof as quartzite or granite
    • More prone to cracking and chipping than granite
    • Requires periodic sealing
